Real estate private equity firm Gaw Capital Partners and Indonesian real estate business Sinar Primera have launched a new data center in Batam, Indonesia.
This week saw Gaw, through its Golden Digital Gateway joint venture with Sinar Primera, announce the opening of a new carrier-neutral colocation data center in Batam’s Nongsa Digital Park.
Phase one of the new data center offers 5.2 MW on a 13,000 sqm site. Phase II aims to deliver a further 20MW.
Kok Chye Ong, managing director, head of data center platform, Asia, of Gaw Capital, said the build-out has taken nine months. "This achievement is a testament to our shared commitment to providing cutting-edge digital infrastructure in Indonesia, paving the way for a brighter, more connected future," Ong said.
Gaw first announced plans for a data center in Nongsa park back in October 2021 alongside Data Center First. After DCF apparently went out of business, Gaw partnered with Indonesian developer Sinar Primera for the project instead.
“With a focus on new economy real estate, Sinar Primera is committed to delivering solutions that are not only innovative but also sustainable,” said Hong Kah Jin, head of Sinar Primera Group. “The presence of this data center in Batam will open new opportunities for companies that require world-class IT infrastructure at a more competitive cost compared to Singapore.”
Batam is the largest city in the Riau Islands and is located close to Singapore, on the opposite side of the Singapore Strait. Nongsa Park, developed by Citramas Group, has been granted special economic zone (SEZ) status, which provides beneficial tax tariffs. Telkom Indonesia & Etisalat and GDS are also looking at developing in Nongsa Park.
Hong Kong-based Gaw has already invested in data centers through a joint venture with Centrin in China, and previously broke ground on a data center joint venture with A3 Capital in Malaysia.
It has also announced investments and/or projects in Tokyo, South Korea, and Vietnam. Gaw was reportedly interested in bidding for Global Switch, but didn’t make the final bidders' shortlist.
