Finnish telecoms provider DNA Plc is migrating its on-premise workloads to Google Cloud.
The migration project will begin with moving 100 core applications to Google Cloud later this year.
The company is subject to a number of compliance requirements, including data residency in Finland, and will thus use Google Distributed Cloud to host mission-critical infrastructure within its own data centers.
Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) is Google's Edge offering that brings its cloud capabilities and servers on-premise for customers. The first version of Google's Distributed Cloud offering was launched in October 2021.
The workloads that do not need to be held on-premise by DNA will go to Google Cloud's Hamina data center, enabling DNA to significantly reduce its data center footprint.
Google bought its Hamina data center in 2009. It is built on the site of the former Summa Mill, uses seawater to cool its servers, and offers waste heat to local homes and businesses. The data center has been upgraded several times over the last 15 years, and in 2022, Google purchased 50 acres of land next to the data center to accommodate a possible expansion.
"Our cloud transformation will help achieve new levels of speed, innovation, operational adaptability, and long-term efficiencies – with a goal of staying at the forefront of connectivity for our customers," said Jussi Tolvanen, CEO of DNA Plc.
DNA will further use Google's BigQuery data platform, and Google Kubernetes Engine.
"We're thrilled to work with DNA on this exciting cloud transformation as we share a common goal of empowering Finnish businesses and consumers with secure and innovative digital experiences," said Markus Hongisto, Google Cloud's Finland country manager. "DNA's strategy perfectly illustrates how prioritizing data residency, security, and compliance actually fuels rapid and safe innovation."
DNA is a subsidiary of Telenor Group, which similarly partnered with Google Cloud in October 2024 to use Google's data and analytics solutions, including BigQuery, integrated with Vertex AI and Looker.
Telenor is developing a data center in Oslo, Norway, via a joint venture dubbed Skygard with Hafslund and Hitecvision. The company also seemingly has a data center in Helsinki, Finland.
Telecoms company Orange is also a known customer of Google Distributed Cloud.
