The facility offers capacity for 1,125 cabinets across 3,045 sqm (32,775 sq ft) of colocation space. Plans for IL4 phase one were announced in the company’s Q4 2022 results.

The new facility is located on the same campus as Equinix’s existing Istanbul facility, IL2. The facility has been designed with the ability to support liquid cooling for high-density deployments.

Aslihan Güreşcier, managing director for Equinix in Türkiye, said: “We are proud to announce the opening of our second data center in Istanbul, Turkiye. The building and opening of our new state-of-the-art IL4 facility is a clear demonstration of our commitment to supporting businesses as they embrace artificial intelligence and high-density compute solutions in this strategically important part of the world.

"Istanbul's location is key as a connectivity hub between Europe and Asia, coupled with its rapidly growing IT services market, makes it an ideal destination for businesses to grow, and achieve their connectivity goals.”

Equinix entered the Turkish market in 2017 after acquiring Zenium’s data center campus in Istanbul for $93 million.

The deal included three buildings – only one of which was fully built out at the time. At the time of the deal, the site had 1,500 square meters (16,146 sq ft) of colocation space available, with potential to be increased to 12,000 square meters (129,167 sq ft) and up to 22MW of critical customer load. According to Equinix’s earnings results, the third phase of what is now known as IL2 launched in Q3 2022, adding 550 racks.
