Trinasolar International System Business Unit (ISBU), Trinasolar’s solar and battery storage (BESS) development arm, has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Equinix for 30MW of solar power in Japan.
The PPA will support the construction of the 30MW Yufutsu Abira Project in Hokkaido, Japan.
The PPA is Equinix’s first in the Japanese market, and will commence upon the commissioning of the plant, which is expected by Q3 2028.
“Our first PPA in Japan empowers our customers to confidently pursue aggressive decarbonization objectives, knowing the energy consumption of their data center operations at Equinix is covered by renewable energy," Kuniko Ogawa, managing director and president of Equinix Japan said
According to Trinasolar ISBU, the PPA marks a key step in its transition from a renewable solutions provider into a clean energy supplier in the Japanese market. It represents the ISBU’s first corporate solar agreement within the market.
"This is our first corporate solar power agreement in Japan. We look forward to fostering further partnerships with corporate offtakers that drive the country's green energy transformation," said Feng Chen, director, Trinasolar ISBU Japan.
Trinasolar ISBU serves as Trinasolar’s global platform for the development of utility scale solar and BESS projects. The PPA is part of the business unit's transition from a pure developer to a global independent power producer.
Equinix has a growing presence in the Japanese market. Last June, the company launched its fourth data center in the country, in the city of Osaka. Operating under the company's xScale brand, which is aimed at hyperscale tennants, OS4x has a total of 14.4MW of IT power across 4,925 sqm (53,025 sq ft) of data center space.
In addition to the OS4x data center, Equinix also has two xScale data centers in Tokyo, TY12x and TY13x, and another one in Osaka, OS2x.
The Japanese PPA market has seen increased activity in recent months, as data center operators scramble for reliable power supply. In January, Amazon inked two PPAs in the country, with EDP Renewables and X-Elio.
