State-owned Bolivian telco Entel Bolivia has launched a data center and announced plans for a fiber expansion.
The $52 million facility in El Alto has been built on an area of around 4,500 sqm, as reported by BNAmericas. The data center is equipped with 500kW generators.
“Today we are giving all private and public companies, and those who wish to protect their databases, this large and innovative data center, where they will be able to store information with international security standards,” President of Bolivia Luis Arce said in a release from the public works ministry.
It is likely that the facility is the same one that was announced by the Bolivian government in March 2023.
The company also announced an investment of $58 million to expand fiber optic access to 100 percent of the public in 116 Bolivian municipalities.
Entel Bolivia is planning to extend its fiber-to-the-home technology to all municipal capitals this year, including those in rural communities.
The company has already deployed fiber across 219 of Bolivia’s 340 municipalities.
Entel first began deploying its fiber optic network in 2019. It successfully tested 5G in Santa Cruz de la Sierra with Huawei in the same year.
All data centers in the country are in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, according to DatacenterMap. Operators include Tigo DC and Confiared.
Founded in 1965 by the Bolivian government, Italy's TIM took a 50 percent stake in Entel Bolivia in 1995. It was re-nationalized again in 2008. It is separate from the Chilean telco Entel.
