UK mobile carrier EE has deployed its 5G Standalone network at Wembley Stadium, the biggest sporting venue in the country.

EE claims that Wembley Stadium, located in North-West London, has become the first UK sporting venue to receive a dedicated 5G Standalone (5G SA) network.

BT only launched its 5G SA network in September, well over a year after domestic rival Vodafone and several months after Virgin Media O2. Unlike its rivals, however, EE charges a premium for the service.

The 5G SA network will be used for the first time later this month during an England Women's football match.

5G SA operates solely on a 5G Core network and is not reliant on older mobile technologies such as 4G.

EE's announcement today (February 10) comes a couple of weeks after the telco extended its naming rights deal with Wembley Stadium.

The carrier initially deployed its 5G SA network in 15 cities, including London, Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Manchester.

In October, EE announced it would expand the service to an additional 16 locations across the UK.

EE was the first carrier in the UK to launch its 5G network in May 2019.
