Containerized data center manufacturer AST Modular has delivered mission critical facilities to an oilfield in Iraq for an un-named major oil and gas customer.

The company is operating in one of the most strategic sites in the world. The oilfield itself is considered the fourth largest field in the world and it reportedly holds an estimated 17 billion barrels (2.7×109 m3) of oil. The oil sits approximately 2,400 m (7,900 ft) below the surface which is considered an easy target for production.

The data center project consists of four phases with containers being fully pre-manufactured and kitted out before on-site deployment. (see technical specifications below.)

THE CLIENT

AST describes its client as the third-largest energy company and fourth-largest company in the world measured by 2011 revenues and one of the six oil and gas supermajors. It is vertically integrated and is active in every area of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation andtrading. It also has renewable energy activities in biofuels and wind power.

BUSINESS NEED & SOLUTION

The oil company's current IT environment in Iraq does not feature a centralized, highly available data center with reliable critical MEP infrastructure and has unlimited capacity for current and future IT load growth. The existing data center facilities do not comply the customer’s Operational Excellence requirements.

Containerized data centers are being deployed in different phases – with currently phase 4 being engineered. All infrastructure components are installed at AST Modular’s manufacturing plants, eliminating the need of on site contactors.

AST Modular containerized data centers provide a secure location for onsite data processing and storage. ISO containers are easily transportable via sea, land and air meaning that they can be rapidly deployed to production fields.

The customer will  benefit from an integrated, custom-fit solution that will give the company a pre-frabricated modular data center. Containers will accommodate the IT growth of our client’s Exploration & Production over the next 10 years.
