Another data center development is being proposed in the Fort Worth area of Texas.
As reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, oil and gas company Black Mountain filed to rezone 141 acres on the southeast corner of Lon Stephenson Road & Forest Hill Drive in the Forest Hill area of Forth Worth to allow for data center development.
The largely undeveloped land was previously zoned “AG” Agriculture, “A-5” One Family Residential, “CR” Low Density Multifamily & “F” General Commercial, and the company was seeking to change this to “PD/SU” Planned Development Specific Use for data center and other uses.
Further details on the data center were not shared. Rhett Bennett, Black Mountain’s CEO, suggested the site would not be used for cryptomining while speaking at the city’s January 8 planning commission meeting.
The commission voted 6-4 in favor of recommending approval of the project to the city council. City staff had recommended approval with conditions. The city council will vote on the project this week.
Founded in 2007, Black Mountain is an energy company largely focused on investments in oil and gas as well as lithium mining, but is also targeting battery storage, water, and carbon capture.
Black Mountain Energy has previously announced plans to potentially deploy flare-gas cryptomining facilities at a fracking project in Australia alongside Highwire Energy.
The company reached out to DCD to clarify the announcement of that project was a letter of intent to explore options, and hasn't actually deployed any hardware at gas-flare sites yet.
