Mount Airy is in the north of the state, close to the Virginia border. North Carolina has a relatively small data center market, with Data Center Map listing 64 data centers, the majority of which are located around Charlotte, and a second cluster focused on Raleigh.
Interest has been growing in the region, however. In September 2024, PowerHouse expressed an interest in developing a significant data center campus in the state, and Microsoft broke ground on a third campus in Catawba County. Google is reportedly planning to expand its campus near Charlotte.
