Data center provider CyrusOne plans to build two new data centers outside of Chicago in Aurora, Illinois.

According to a report from Bisnow, the company submitted plans to Aurora lawmakers last month.

The proposed data centers will span more than 500,000 sq ft (46,500 sqm) on a 32-acre site, located across from Interstate 88 on Bilter Road in Kendall County.

The Bilter Road campus is close to CyrusOne’s existing facility in Aurora. In addition, the company plans to build three telecommunications towers; two on the Bilter Road campus and one on the existing campus.

The first phase of the proposed development will see the construction of a 411,000 sq ft (38,200 sqm) two-story data center, featuring facilities for backup generators.

A second 153,000 sq ft (14,200 sqm) data center will be built in a later phase. Other specifications of the data centers have not been shared.

According to CyrusOne’s filings, the telecom towers will be built before the data centers. CyrusOne said its telco towers are critical to the design and performance of its data centers and will provide lower latency for the facilities’ tenants.

CyrusOne purchased its data center campus in Aurora in 2016, at the time a 428,000 sq ft (40,000 sqm) facility. The company added a second facility to the site in 2017 and a third facility last year.

Edged Energy is also planning a three-building, 96MW campus across the road that will launch in Q3 2024.

Last month, CyrusOne was said to be planning a $150 million data center development in New Albany, Ohio.

Digital Realty, Iron Mountain, Stream DC, Hivelocity, and NTT all operate data centers in the Chicago area.

Acquired by KKR and Global Infrastructure partners in 2022, CyrusOne currently operates 50 facilities globally, including 32 in the US.
