Indian data center operator CtrlS has launched its data center campus in Chennai, India, with the inauguration of the second and final facility at that campus.

Located in the Ambattur industrial area, the Namma data center park is home to CtrlS’ two Chennai facilities, totaling 72MW across 1 million sq ft (92,900 sqm).

Plans for the campus were first announced in February last year. The first of the two facilities was launched in Spring last year, with the second being inaugurated this week.

The second building - Chennai DC 2 - will offer 27MW of capacity across 290,000 sq ft (26,900 sqm).

At the time of the announcement, the Chennai campus was set to see an investment of around $482.5 million.

In a LinkedIn post, the company said: “A testament to Chennai’s long-standing journey of innovation, CtrlS Chennai Datacenter Park in the Ambattur district will serve as the powerhouse of Tamil Nadu’s digital excellence, backed by our world-class AI-ready capabilities.”

CtrlS has facilities in Mumbai, Bangalore, Noida, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, with Edge locations in Lucknow and Patna.

At the end of 2023, the company announced plans to invest $2 billion over the next six years, expanding across Asia and the Middle East. To date, the company has more than 250MW of IT capacity and is also planning a 150MW campus in Thailand.

At the end of last year, CtrlS announced it aimed to operationalize a 50MW solar installation within 12 to 15 months as part of its plan to transition all sites to solar energy generation.

A recent report from JLL said the Indian data center industry is set to grow by 66 percent by 2026, adding 604MW of capacity. The report identified Hyderabad as a key market, alongside Mumbai and Bangalore.

Chennai is home to the likes of Sify Technologies, Digital Realty, AdaniConneX, STT, NTT, Nxtra by Airtel, Tata Communications, and Colt. It is also a landing point for numerous subsea cables including BBG, i1i, CANI, India Asia-Xpress, SeaMeWe-4, and MIST, with SeaMeWe-6 and ICE IV expected to join in the coming years.
