The Community of Communes of Ernée in France is set to deploy two immersion cooled data centers. centers will be used by the 15 municipalities that are members of the joint Information Systems service.

Hyperion immersion cooling
Hyperion's immersion cooled data center – Hyperion

The project is being conducted by Numains Group and will use Hyperion's immersion cooled solution. Hyperion says that this removes the need for air conditioning, and can save up to 50 percent in electricity consumption.

The Hyperion solution is a stainless steel tank containing a biodegradable fluid that is not electrically conductive.

According to the companies, the Communes of Ernée will become the first French local authority to have immersion cooling in its data center premises.

The data centers will be located on the premises of the Community of Communes and at the AquaFitness de l'Ernée. The current installation date is expected for the summer of 2024. DCD has contacted Ernée for more information about the capacity of the data centers.

In addition, the waste heat will be reused by nearby buildings for central heating or underfloor heating. This is hoped to help the municipalities in their aim of carbon neutrality by 2040. The data centers are expected to operate at a PUE of less than 1.1.

Hyperion is a subsidiary of Numains Group, a company that supports companies in setting up their digital infrastructure and IT systems. Hyperion was launched in 2022.

A similar project in the UK is run by Deep Green which has a "digital boiler," a small immersion-cooled system installed at a leisure center in Devon, UK, where its waste heat warms a swimming pool.
