Thai telecommunication company CAT Telecom has invested 560m baht to double capacity in its data centers after increasing demand for digital media and entertainment data storage, according to the Bangkok Post.
CAT’s assistant VP for data centers Yuttasart Nitipaichit said the expansion is needed after increased demand from 24 digital television channels, digital entertainment content, mobile apps and e-learning content.
Of the 560m baht budget, 500m baht will be used to double the capacity of CAT’s data center in Bangkok’s Bang Rak district – including the upgrade of the networking and storage of its Bang Rak headquarters to provide subscription-based IT services.
CAT’s Bang Rak headquarters handles domestic internet exchange centers and international internet gateways.
The site uses a fiber-optic transmission system and is linked with major telecoms operators from fixed-line telephones to mobile and internet services.
CAT will also provide infrastructure for government cloud services.
It has major data centers in Bang Rak, Chaeng Watthana and Nonthaburi.
Nitipaichit said currently data center and cloud contribute to less than 1% total revenue but, it is expected to rise to 10% within five years.
CAT is one of seven members of Acasia Communications, an association of Southeast Asian telecommunications companies which recently launched its global data center.
Nitipaichit said the expansion is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
