Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) has successfully migrated its data platform to Amazon Web Services (AWS), covering its European and Uruguay operations.

BBVA announced its plans to migrate to the cloud provider in February 2023, citing the need for high-performance computing (HPC) for some of its applications, including valuations of complex transactions, risk scenarios, and regulatory requirements in different business units.

Just shy of two years later, BBVA revealed that it has completed the migration of its data platform - dubbed ADA (Analytics, Data, AI) to AWS in both Europe and Uruguay. On the back of that success, the bank will now look to expand its use of ADA into Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Argentina in 2025.

According to BBVA, the AWS-based platform has reduced latency for end-user analytical work environments by 94 percent and has enabled BBVA to scale resources depending on demand.

Thus far, BBVA has migrated tens of thousands of processes, and thousands of users to AWS to develop the ASA.

Carlos Casas, global head of engineering at BBVA, said: “This milestone underscores the bank’s commitment to technological innovation and its vision moving forward, as a leader in democratizing the use of data globally, while positioning itself right at the forefront of digital transformation in global banking.”

Scott Mullins, managing director of financial services at AWS, added: “BBVA’s ADA platform is a pioneering project in the adoption of cloud technology within the banking sector, demonstrating BBVA’s ability to adapt and evolve in a dynamic environment. ADA is a platform designed for the future, and its innovative approach is transforming internal processes, thus making BBVA more operationally efficient, better able to attract technology talent, and lead the way in advanced technology.”

BBVA first announced plans to use AWS infrastructure in 2016. The company has data centers in Madrid, Mexico, and Turkey, and is also a Google Cloud customer.

Through 2024, AWS won several contracts with major financial institutions including The Co-operative Bank, Danske Bank, and Macquarie
