The UK's British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is undergoing a cloud migration.

The BBC will move its IT systems including finance, HR, and procurement to RISE with SAP on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The BBC hopes that moving its IT systems to the cloud will be more cost-effective than its current model of separate contracts for the use of data centers and software licenses. This will free up money for investing in "high quality services" for the BBC's audience.

Peter O’Kane, BBC's CTO, said: “We want to make sure we’re investing the most we can in services for audiences. By simplifying our IT services, we can focus on running our business and ensure we’re meeting the needs of our viewers and listeners.”

Tanuja Randery, VP and MD of Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) at AWS, said: “We’re delighted that the BBC has chosen to move its critical SAP business systems to run on AWS. Our proven track record in delivering high-performance, secure, and scalable cloud services aligns perfectly with the BBC’s needs and enables them to improve performance, increase resilience and reliability, and accelerate their digital transformation journey with confidence.”

In 2020, the BBC revealed it had nearly completed another cloud migration project centered around its BBC Online website, which had reportedly previously been housed in two data centers near London. Similarly, this migration was to AWS.

Several other UK broadcasters have made similar moves to the cloud. March of 2023 saw ITN, ITV, and Channel 4 all making moves to a cloud-based offering.

ITN announced plans to move its workflows to AWS which would include its channels ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5, and would be ditching its on-premise data center in London. ITV and Channel 4, united in joint Venture Digital 3&4, planned to move the processing of regionalized TV content across all Freeview channels to BT’s ‘Vena,’ a smart broadcast network.

Earlier this month, France Télévisions, Radio France, France Médias Monde, and TV5 Monde partnered with Thésée Datacenter to assist with their transition to cloud solutions.
