"I am pleased to announce the signing of a landmark MoU with AWS, one of the foremost hyperscalers in the world. AWS's decision to set up its operations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is a pivotal moment for Maharashtra,” said Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

"As we fulfill our vision of becoming a global capital for data centers, this collaboration will not only bolster our state's technological infrastructure, but also create new opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and job creation. We are committed to fostering a conducive environment for such transformative investments and driving Maharashtra's digital future forward."

AWS first entered the Indian market with its Mumbai region launching in 2016. The company invested $3.7bn into that region between 2016 and 2022. AWS later launched a cloud region in Hyderabad in 2022.

The commitment of $8.3bn to the Mumbai cloud region is part of a wider investment plan that will see AWS spending $12.7 billion in India as a whole, which was previously announced in May 2023.

According to reports by The Hindu and other publications, AWS also announced that it would be investing $6.95 billion in its Telangana (Hyderabad) region during the World Economic Forum 2025.

Towards the end of 2024, reports emerged that AWS had acquired a 38.18-acre parcel of land in Palava, just outside of Mumbai from realty developer Lodha.

AWS is also planning Local Zones in Chennai and Bengaluru, with operating Local Zones in Delhi and Kolkata.
