Amazon is looking to expand its data center footprint in Montgomery County, Missouri, and is discussing plans for a project with locals in Indiana.
As reported by Mid-Missouri Business, a representative from Amazon informed Montgomery County commissioners of its intentions to expand its data center presence in the area by up to 15 new data center buildings.
The data center buildings would be located on 890 acres of land at a separate site from where Amazon Web Services (AWS) is already developing a campus.
AWS has not yet acquired the property, but is planning to build nearer to Danville.
No date for construction has been set as of yet, but the company is planning to begin sometime between 2027 and 2029 should the project be approved.
Elsewhere in Montgomery County, AWS is building a 1,000-acre campus in New Florence. AWS is planning to develop in two phases, the first of which will see eight data center buildings constructed. The second phase could see a further 13 buildings of a similar size established. In June of this year, the company said it would invest $10 billion in the campus.
Montgomery County lies west of St. Louis and east of Columbia. St. Louis and Kansas City are the state's largest data center markets.
AWS eyes Posey, Indiana
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Midwest, AWS is holding an open house to discuss a project that could come to Posey County in Indiana.
According to reports from Tristate Homepage, AWS is exploring several properties for the potential data center, and the project remains early in the planning phase.
Part of the appeal of the region is that CenterPoint Energy has excess capacity on its power grid.
During the open house, Keith Klein, AWS director of Data Center Solutions, said: “We’re here to talk to the community and to understand exactly what the community is looking for in a deployment of this size, and continue that particular dialogue with us. We’re open to hearing that particular conversation, and don’t look at us as someone you can’t speak to: we want to hear from the community, and we want to build something together."
Posey County is located in southwest Indiana, near Evansville. Most of Indiana's data centers are located in Indianapolis, Gary, and South Bend.
