AMD is reportedly set to make its high-performance computing chips at TSMC’s Fab 21 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Following in Apple’s footsteps, independent journalist Tim Culpan reported that AMD and TSMC had confirmed the agreement on October 7, although the chip manufacturer declined requests for comment on the deal.
TSMC is building three fabs in Phoenix, Arizona, two of which will produce 4nm and 3nm semiconductors, and a third will manufacture 2nm chips. Production of Apple’s A16 Bionic chip is already underway at Fab 21, using TSMC’s N4P process, an extension of the company’s 5nm process family but which offers an 11 percent higher performance and 22 percent higher power efficiency when compared to N5.
While no further information has been disclosed about the chips AMD is planning to manufacture, Fab 21 is only capable of producing N4 and N5 technologies.
Earlier this week, TSMC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with US semiconductor product packaging and test services company, Amkor Technology which will see Amkor provide the chip maker with turnkey advanced packaging and test services at its planned outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) plant in Peoria, Arizona.
Both TSMC and Amkor have been awarded funding from the US government under the CHIPS and Science Act to support the construction of their Arizona plants
Culpan additionally reported that TSMC is in talks with a number of clients to tape out products in Arizona next year and that another chip designer could be also be confirmed as a customer in the near future.
