Amazon Web Services (AWS) has filed to add 322 acres to its planned tech park in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
According to an application filed with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) district in Norfolk, Virginia, AWS is planning a 322-acre campus just west of Massaponax Church Road.
The filings are for Phase II of the previously permitted Cosner Tech Campus and will see the build of five data center buildings totaling 1.3 million sq ft (120,773 sqm), a water treatment facility, two ski lodge buildings for storing data center components, a substation pad, necessary stormwater facilities, and utility infrastructure.
The tech giant first submitted plans for Phase I of the campus in June 2023, proposing two 250,000 sq ft (23,225 sqm) data centers and a substation.
The campus is set to provide 450MW of data center capacity by 2029. Other specifications have not been shared.
At the same time, AWS filed for three other data center campuses in Spotsylvania County, all totaling more than 10 million sq ft (929,000 sqm) of development.
There are no updates on the other three campuses: Carter’s Store Tech Campus, Summit Crossing Tech Campus, and Orrock Tech Campus.
Loudoun and Fairfax Counties have traditionally been Virginia’s data center hub. As available land and power have become harder to come by, many developers are expanding into Prince William County.
However, some early movers are seeking to develop major campuses across the state.
Orange, Culpeper, Stafford, Fauquier, King George, Frederick, and Tazewell Counties have all seen data center applications filed.
USACE is a military engineering branch of the US Army, responsible for designing, constructing, and managing projects. Norfolk is one of the branch’s districts of jurisdiction.
