Amazon has signed two Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) in India for a combined 199MW across two onshore wind projects.
The first PPA was signed with CleanMax, an Asia-focused renewable developer, for energy from a 100MW onshore wind project currently under development in Koppal, Karnataka.
CleanMax says the PPA will support the development of the wind farm, which is expected to be operational by Q2 2026. When operational, it is expected to generate 355 million kWh of energy annually.
Commenting on the PPA, Kuldeep Jain, managing director at CleanMax, said: "As a company that has always championed sustainability, CleanMax is elated to collaborate with Amazon to help decarbonize its operations while also advancing the green energy landscape.”
CleanMax has 2GW of operational renewable assets across Asia. In June 2023, it received backing from alternative asset manager Brookfield, which committed $360 million to the company.
CleanMax has already signed several PPAs with data center firms. Last November, it inked a 33MW PPA with Equinix to support the development of a captive renewable power plant in Maharashtra. The firm also signed a PPA with Meta in 2021, which was Meta’s first PPA in the Indian market.
The second PPA was signed with BluPine Energy, an Indian renewable energy developer, for energy from a 99MW wind project in India. Under the terms of the PPA, BluPine will deliver 360GWh of energy annually to Amazon.
Further details on the length of the PPA and the location of the wind project were not disclosed. DCD has contacted both companies for clarification.
“This collaboration with Amazon is a testament to our expertise in developing high-quality renewable energy assets that drive tangible environmental impact. As we scale towards a 1GW portfolio in the commercial and industrial segment, we remain focused on enabling businesses to transition to a cleaner energy future,” said Neerav Nanavaty, CEO of BluPine Energy.
With this project, BluPine claims to have reached 3GW of total renewable capacity, including 1GW of operational capacity across 30 sites in nine Indian states. BluPine was established in 2021 by Actis, a global investment firm focusing on sustainable infrastructure.
Amazon has invested in several renewable energy projects across India to power its operations. In Rajasthan, it has backed three solar projects, representing 420MW of capacity. In addition, the company has invested in a 198MW wind farm in Osmanabad, Maharashtra.
India is becoming a hotbed of data center activity, with major hyperscalers making large commitments in the sector. Last month, Amazon Web Services (AWS) committed to invest $8.3 billion in developing cloud infrastructure for its AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra, India.
AWS entered the Indian market in 2016 when it launched its Mumbai cloud region. It followed this up in 2022, launching a further cloud region in Hyderabad.
