Amazon will invest €16 billion ($17.98bn) in various infrastructure buildouts in Germany in 2027.

The company will use the investment to expand data centers and AI infrastructure in the company, as well as for high-speed satellite Internet through Amazon Leo and a new production slate by Prime Video.

To date, Amazon has spent some €100 billion in Germany since 2010.

Of the €16bn, €4.8bn ($5.39bn) will go towards data centers and AI to expand the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) region.

"Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe. That is why we have invested more than €100 billion here since 2010, and why we plan to invest an additional €16 billion in 2027. We want German businesses, communities, and creators to have the infrastructure and tools they need to compete and grow," said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer.

Katherina Reiche, federal minister for economic affairs and energy in Germany, added: "Amazon's investment is a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future. High-performance data centers are the foundation of the digital economy. With the data wealth of our industry, we also have the potential to become a global leader in industrial AI. These are exactly the kinds of investments we need: they strengthen Germany's position in international technology competition and create value and jobs in the process."

Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Frankfurt region has been operating since 2014, and has been expanded many times. In June 2024, AWS said it would invest $9.44bn in its Frankfurt cloud region by 2026, and in November 2025, the company was said to be looking to develop data centers outside Frankfurt in Schöneck and Maintal, in the Hesse region of Germany. In Maintal, this will include a two-building campus stretching 26 acres.

The region has three availability zones, and according to Baxtel, it has four operating data center sites and one in progress.

Also in Germany is AWS' Sovereign European Cloud. In 2024, the company said it would invest €7.8 billion ($8.47bn) in its sovereign cloud infrastructure in Germany through 2040. That cloud is based in Brandenburg.

The company has not detailed how the remaining €11.2bn ($12.58bn) will be divided between Amazon Leo, logistics, and Prime Video.
