Amazon Web Services (AWS) has made its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) storage-optimized I8g and I7ie instances generally available.
The I8g instances are powered by AWS Graviton4 processors, and use the third-generation AWS Nitro SSDs, and local NVMe storage which can offer up to 65 percent better real-time storage performance per terabyte and up to 50 percent lower storage I/O latency.
The AWS Graviton4 uses a 64-bit Arm instruction set architecture and has 73 billion transistors. Graviton chips were first launched in 2018 with the Graviton1. The latest iteration offers four times the performance of the original Graviton chip.
The chip is based on the Demeter V2 core from Arm, the same core that Nvidia is using for its 72-core Grace CPU.
Designed for storage-intensive workloads, AWS claims they can offer up to a 60 percent better compute performance compared to previous generation I4g instances.
The I8g instances are currently available in the US East (Northern Virginia), US West (Oregon) AWS regions.
The I8g can be scaled up to 24xlarge which has 96 vCPUs, 768 GiB of memory, and 22.5 TB of storage.
According to AWS, they are suited to I/O intensive workloads that need low latency, such as transactional databases, real-time databases, and real-time analytics.
Also now generally available are the Amazon EC2 I7ie instances.
The I7ie instances have up to 120 TB of low latency NVMe storage and feature the 5th generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors with an all-core turbo frequency of 3.2Ghz. The instances similarly use 3rd generation Nitro SSDs.
Intel launched its 5th Gen Xeon Scalable processors in December 2023. The chips contain up to 64 cores and have an L3 cache of 320MB, over double the size of the previous generation’s L3 cache of 112.5MB.
The I7ie is available up to 48xlarge size, which features 192 vCPUs and 1,536 GiB of memory. It also has an EBS bandwidth and network bandwidth of 60 Gbps and 100 Gbps, respectively.
According to AWS, the I7ie delivers the highest storage density available in the cloud today.
I7ie instances are now available in the US East (Ohio, N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), and Europe (Frankfurt, London) AWS Regions, and can be accessed in On-Demand, Spot, Savings Plan, Dedicated Instance, and Dedicated Host forms.
