Cloud computing firm Akamai has signed a virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with EDP Asia-Pacific, which will see the company offtake up to 13MW of power from a portfolio of rooftop solar arrays in Singapore.

The power will be generated from a portfolio of rooftop solar projects across 27 locations, which have the potential to generate up to 17,000MWh every year. All of the sites are already operational.

Commenting on the deal, Mike Mattera, director, corporate sustainability at Akamai, said: “AI is accelerating demand for computing capacity, but the conversation cannot be only about adding more infrastructure. We also need to think about the energy required to support that growth. As Akamai expands its distributed cloud infrastructure across Asia-Pacific, we want renewable energy procurement to grow alongside it. Singapore is an important place to begin because it demonstrates how rooftop solar can contribute to renewable energy generation even in a highly urbanized country.”

According to Akamai, the deal is part of the company's larger renewable strategy to reach 100 percent renewable energy use and net-zero emissions by 2030.

The companies have also said that the deal is in support of the Singaporean government’s push to expand solar development under its Green Plan 2030, which seeks to leverage all available space, including rooftops, to increase renewable deployments in the country’s land-constrained market.

Akamai is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and specializes in cybersecurity, cloud computing, and content delivery network services. Last month, the firm signed a seven-year $11.6 billion deal with Anthropic to lease compute to the AI firm.

EDP Renewables APAC arm has an installed capacity of approximately 1.5GW. The firm is headquartered in Singapore and operates across nine countries in the region, including Vietnam, Singapore, China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, and Thailand.
