Swiss power and automation giant ABB has won an order to supply 54 “ultra-efficient” 10 kV dry-type transformers for an R&D and data storage center in Tianjin, China.

Owned by Chinese ISP giant Tencent, the data center is being built to enhance the company’s growth in northern China as it looks to expand its cloud computing and R&D capabilities.

ABB said the “eco-efficient” dry-type transformers are effective in dealing with power reliability and efficiency issues in data centers, and are capable of reducing no-load losses by up to 10% compared to similar standard transformers.

It added the transformers feature “excellent” short circuit resistance and overload support capacity, eliminate leakage risk of flammable or contaminating substances, and minimize power losses.

The epoxy resin cast transformers will be manufactured in ABB's Shanghai facility.

ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1,200 kV, dry and liquid distribution transformers, traction and special application transformers as well as related services and components.

The news follows last month’s launch by ABB of a version of its Decathlon data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software optimized for schools.
