New York's data centers are at a breaking point as they confront a growing energy crisis. As demand for digital infrastructure skyrockets, so does the need for sustainable energy solutions—but New York's power grid is ill-equipped to meet these escalating demands. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers consumed 460TWh of electricity in 2022, and that figure could more than double to over 1,000TWh by 2026 in a worst-case scenario. With the state's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) pushing for net-zero emissions by 2050, how can the data center industry keep pace?
Meanwhile, Local Law 97 places strict emissions caps on buildings, including data centers. Can the industry truly meet sustainability targets, or will it continue to rely on fossil fuels, jeopardizing New York's green goals? With limited renewable options, is it time to explore controversial measures like microgrids or reopening coal plants?
Under the Chatham House Rule, this DCD>Debate invites industry experts to unravel these pivotal issues shaping the landscape of data center evolution.
