The Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact was established in January 2021 to make data centres in Europe Climate Neutral by 2030.
What does it promise?
Pact signatories commit to targets in five critical areas of sustainability
- We purchase 100% carbon-free energy
- We prioritise water conservation
- We reuse and repair servers
- We prove energy efficiency with measurable targets
- We look for ways to recycle heat
How does it do it?
The Pact brings together experts from across the whole sector to share
insights, data and approaches.
Technical Working Groups establish robust, challenging, and realistic targets and measures through dialogue and consensus building . These provide a framework for informed action and progress for signatories to meet their commitments under the Pact.
The Pact is vital because it commits those responsible a significant proportion of data centre capacity in Europe to firm sustainability targets
“Today’s pledge from important parts of the data industry constitutes a promise to society and offers a welcome first step towards achieving our common ambitions for a smart and sustainable future.”
Frans Timmermans, European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal
