Apple could be planning to put its next data center in the Netherlands, according to a report by iPhoneClub.nl, a Dutch tech news provider.

It said the facility will be built in Eemshaven, a key economic region for the Netherlands which is home to a number of power plants – coal and gas – as well as a 15MW wind farm, which would be in standing with Apple’s renewable energy commitments.

It also has strong fiber connectivity with a landing point for Tata Communication’s transatlantic cable.

The project has been nicknamed Saturn and if it goes ahead it could put the area on the map as an Internet data center location.

Google also operates a 10,000 sq m facility from the region and Microsoft is also said to be constructing a US$2.7bn data center there on a 40-acre site.

Apple is famously secretive about its data center builds but it does release information on its data center energy use.

In March 2013 it claimed to have reached 100% renewable energy use across all its data centers through on-site generation and purchase agreements.
